This is a very good sounding plexi-type of distortion by Carl Martin. It has a few annoyances though: It has too much bass, crunch-pot has poor range in lower gain tones, boost control is too over the top and distortion signal is bleeding to clean sound in bypass.
To fix these issues I did the following:
* For more balanced bass response I replaced the 2.2uF cap with a 1uF cap.
* I replaced the crunch pot with a 100k audio pot instead of the original linear pot to give it better range.
* For boost control I subbed the 500k linear pot for a 50k linear pot to get much more useable boost range.
* Signal bleeding fix was more tricky than others and for that I had to replace the original 2pdt footswitch with a 3pdt switch and wire it so that drive circuit is grounded when in bypass.
After the mods this already great pedal is even better than before!
(I received info that newer versions of Plexitone are addressing some of the issues mentioned here, can’t confirm that though)
Soundclip by Jukka-Pekka Berg:
“Signal chain: Fender ’60 Relic Stratocaster (Cunetto neck, Sheptone Pickups) -> Plexitone -> Vox AC30 Top Boost ’64 (Original Celestion Blue Speakers) -> Røde NT1-A -> Focusrite Saffire PRO 24. Clip starts with a Vox clean sound (pedal bypassed).”
