Common and annoying problem with Ernie Ball volume pedals is the string breaking down…usually in the middle of your amazing volume swell delay solo.
Here is how to fix it for cheap. Take the black box holding the jacks out of the pedal. Unsolder three cables coming from the pot. Buy some mason’s line (mine was a few euros for 50m!) and if you have the old strings still in the pedal, take them out and measure carefully how long they are. It takes a bit of tweaking to cut the new strings to correct lenght and it has to be just right! Make note of this lenght for future repairs. I made small knots to the ends of the line to hold it in place since I didn’t have those crimps EB uses.
Once I finally had it in place I took apart the black box and fitted active buffer/splitter circuit inside. I also needed to cut a trace on the stock pcb board and install some new cabling and a power jack to make it work. With this mod you can split the signal and control volume without tone loss, which is something you can’t do with a stock EB VP JR.
I found this video made by EB on youtube that helped a lot fitting the new string: Ernie Ball volume pedal repair
Believe me, it isn’t as easy as it looks on the video ;) (he is using a modified volume pedal..)
These are still better than most volume pedals out there! Buy one at Amazon UK.
They also sell a repair kit if you want to make things a little easier on yourself ;)
