This EVH 5150 III came to me in the usual “no output” state. I’ve repaired some Peavey 5150 heads in the past so I checked for the normal faults: broken power tubes and fuses inside the chassis. Popped in a new matched quad of JJ 6L6GC’s and new fuses and amp came back to life. Big filter caps in this one hadn’t drained because of the broken fuse so there was a nasty 250 volts on the fuse socket! Probe around with a multimeter to avoid these kind of surprises.
This 5150 was built differenty compared to the older ones. Somehow it feels more solid overall.. There’s 8 preamp tubes (3 channels) in this one and they’re mounted vertically next to the power tubes which I think is an improvement. Oh, and it’s made by Fender!
