On the rarer side of Laneys is this pre-supergroup 60-watter. I was supposed to do a small checkup/retube and bias it but after opening it noticed it needs some more work…
Somebody had tinkered with it before me and installed a bias trimmer which was barely attached to anything. Also the insides were covered in oil?!! Caps were bulging and needed replacement. Master volume had been pre-installed after treble pot and that one I left as is, clean work. I much prefer the sound of PPIMV though.
This amp had plate voltage of 618v, screens at 608v and that is just too much for some modern EL34’s. Tried Tung-Sol reissues in there (which are great tubes btw) and they lasted for about 5 seconds. JJ EL34 seemed to hold up really well which was surprising considering the price! Didn’t try KT77 though, they might be even better since they’re specd up to 800v plate voltages. Of course if money wasn’t an issue I’d get NOS RFT from ebay :)
Here are some pics of the amp before/after and some closeups on the filth inside.
