My take on the classic “Hendrix” – type germanium fuzz. The simpler the circuit the more care goes into fine tuning and component selection.
This one uses hand picked and matched NOS NPN germanium transistors. I made some modifications to the original circuit that improve stability, volume and most importantly, tone :) It has simple volume and gain controls but don’t let the amount of controls fool you…there’s a LOT of tones you can whip out of this thing. Unlike the original this one works just fine when power is shared (daisy chained) with boss-type pedals. It also cleans up perfectly when guitar volume is rolled down…so from sparkly clean to creamy sustainy fuzz mayhem and more.
This fuzz was custom-made but I was so happy with the way the graphics and tone turned out I’m gonna make a small batch of these for sale. It will be a slightly altered hybrid silicon/germanium circuit that has even more versatility and more available tones especially in the lower ranges of gain pot. Faster attack, more zing, more middle, works also with clean amps, works after buffered pedals, more available gain etc.
Purple Face Hybrid will be available from Custom Sounds Finland in may 2015.
Soundclips of Purple Face Hybrid by Jukka-Pekka Berg.
Guitars: Fender ’60 Relic Stratocaster and Gibson Les Paul ’59 Reissue (both with Sheptone pickups)
Other pedals: Strymon Flint for a hint of reverb
Amp: Fender 6G2 Brownface Princeton ‘62 (volume about 4 o’clock = clean)
Cab: Heikki Riihinen handmade 1×12” cab with Jensen P12N alnico ‘61
Microphones: Sennheiser MD421 (left) & Shure SM7B (right)
On the dynamics clips only guitar volume is used to control gain. Please note that these clips were recorded into a clean amp!
